Specifying Email Address Rewriting Rules

You can specify rules for changing recipients' and senders' addresses in incoming or outgoing emails prior to delivery. You can use this address mapping or "alias" facility, for example, to reroute email messages to different mail hosts in your organization, or to map one user name to another user name.

How the Gateway uses Email Address Rewriting

You can use a wildcard * to map groups of addresses.

To specify email address rewriting rules

  1. From the System Center Home page, click SMTP Settings. The SMTP Settings page appears.
  2. Click Email Address Rewriting to display the Email Address Rewriting page. The Rewriting Rules table displays the current email address mapping information.
  3. Move the mouse pointer over the Rewriting Rules area and click New. The Add Rule dialog appears in the task panel.
  4. In the Add Rule dialog, specify the following information:

NOTE: If you include wildcards in the Modified address, they must match wildcards in the Original address.

  1. Click Add to add the entry to the routing table.
  2. To add additional rules, repeat steps 4 and 5.

You can change the order of the rules in the address rewriting table. However, this does not affect the order in which they are applied.

You can link rules. For example:

Address 1 is rewritten as Address 2
Address 2 is rewritten as Address 3

Clearswift Gateway applies both rules and maps Address 1 to Address 3.

If you change any configuration settings you must apply the new configuration for the new settings to take effect. If the Gateways are configured as a group, any group changes should be applied to each Gateway.
