Adapting the Starter Policy

Although the starter policy provides a robust set of routes and content rules, you might want to adapt it to suit the specific needs of your organisation. For guidance, you might want to consider the following:

• Modifying the supplied legal disclaimer that the Gateway attaches to outgoing messages
• Examining the starter content rules and adding any unapplied rules to your routes as appropriate
• Creating separate policy routes for mail entering or leaving specific departments in your organisation
• Adding spam detection clauses to content rules to enhance the spam protection provided by SpamLogic

• Spam detection clauses and why I need to use them in addition to SpamLogic

  The Spam Detection clause in a content rule looks for spam-related indicators associated with a message. You can set the severity of spam message detection. For example, you can monitor the rule and increase or decrease the severity of detection depending on the number of undetected spam messages, and false positive messages.

  We recommend that you use spam detection in content rules to enhance the spam policy defined in the SpamLogic Settings, and not as your only means of spam protection.

How do I...

• Modify the supplied legal disclaimer?

  1. From the Clearswift SECURE Email Gateway Home page, click Policy > Message Annotations.

     The Manage Message Annotations page is displayed.

  2. In the Message Annotations panel, click Legal Disclaimer Annotation.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. In the Annotation Content panel, click Click here to change these settings
  5. Modify the Plain Format and HTML Format text as required.
  6. Click Save.
  7. In the Changes Made panel, click Apply Configuration.

• Check the starter content rules and discover what protection they provide?

  To see the content rules applied to the policy, take the following steps:

  1. From the Clearswift SECURE Email Gateway Home page, click Policy > Content Rules.

     The Manage Content Rules page is displayed.

     A list of available rules are listed. Rules that are applied to the policy have a against them.

  2. Click on the rule you want to examine.

  3. Click Edit.

     The policy route the rule is used on, the conditions required to trigger the rule, and the actions taken are described in the What To Look For?, and What To Do? panels.

• Create Policy routes?

  Before you create a policy route, you need to create Address Lists for the client machines that are part of the route. For example, you might want to create a list for a particular department within your organization. You can then create a policy route that references the address lists that have been created. To complete the policy route, you add any required content rules.

• Add spam detection clauses to content rules?

  1. From the Clearswift SECURE Email Gateway Home page, click Policy > Content Rules.

     The Content Rules page is displayed.

  2. Click on the rule you want to add spam detection to.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. In the What To Look For? panel, click Click here to change these settings against the Spam Detection clause.
  5. Select the options you want and click Save.
  6. In the Changes Made panel, click Apply Configuration.

  The clauses contained in a content rule depend on the template used to create the rule. It is possible that not all content rules will contain the Spam Detection clause.
