Running Connectivity Tests

The Connectivity Test option enables you to test a policy's settings for connectivity to system components. The Connectivity Test option performs the following tests:

DNS: Tests the connection to the configured DNS server or servers. See Querying DNS Records for more information.
Real-time IP Blocklist: Tests the SpamLogic connection to Real-time IP Blocklist (RBL) servers. See Configuring Real-time IP Blocklist Settings for more information.
Junk Email and Malware Detection: Tests the connection to the Junk Email and Malware Detection servers. See About Junk Email Detection for more information.
SpamLogic Signatures: Tests the SpamLogic connection to the SpamLogic Signatures service. See About URL Blocklist Checking for more information.
HTTP: Tests the connection to the Clearswift website to access functionality such as access to the online help, and license validation.
IG Server: Tests the connection to the Information Governance Server, if applicable.
SMTP: Tests the connection to internal email servers configured as static hosts. See Network configuration for more information.
Relay to: Tests the connections to mail servers configured in Relay To disposal actions. See About Disposal Actions for more information.
Backup: Tests the connection to the backup FTP Server. See About Backup and Restore for more information.
Peer Gateways: Tests connections to configured Peer Gateways. See About Peer Gateways for more information.
TRUSTmanager: Tests connections to the TRUSTmanager server See Configuring TRUSTmanager for more information.

The connectivity tests are performed on the policy that is open in the policy editor. This is not necessarily the active policy if changes have been made since the policy was last applied. The In-use test result shows whether or not the setting is part of the active policy.

To run connectivity tests

On the System Center Home page, click Connectivity Test in the task panel. The Connectivity Test dialog appears, displaying the results of the test when it was last run.
Click Run Tests. The dialog displays an In Progress message while it runs the test, and then displays the results.
Click either:

View Results: To display test details. See Viewing test results below for more information.
Email Results: To email the results in an XML file attachment to a specified recipient. For example, you could mail the results to Clearswift support to assist with a support query.

To repeat the test, repeat from step 2, otherwise click Close to close the Connectivity Test dialog box.

Viewing test results

The Test Results page displays the results for each of the tests that is performed. The results that are displayed are as follows:

DNS:
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
Server— the IP address of the DNS server.
Host— the host address that is used to test the DNS server.
Real-time Blocklist:
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
Server— the Real-time Blocklist service that is tested.
Check Host— the test entry that is used.
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
Server— the CURBL service that is tested.
Check Host— the test entry that is used.
Bulk Email Detection:
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
Server— the Bulk Email Detection server that is tested.
Proxy— the proxy used.
Spam Signatures:
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
Server— the Spam Signatures service that is tested.
Check Host— the test entry that is used.
HTTP:
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
Protocol— either HTTP or HTTPS.
URL— the test URL that is used.
Proxy— the proxy used.
SMTP:
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
SMTP Server— the SMTP server that is being tested.
Relay To— the server used to store archived messages.
Backup
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
FTP Server— the FTP server and directory that is being tested.
Peer Gateways:
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
Name— the peer that is being tested.
Host— the IP address that is being tested.
TRUSTmanager :
A tick or a cross to denote whether the test passed or failed.
In-use— Yes or No depending on whether or not the policy with the setting has been applied.
Server— the TRUSTmanager server that is being tested.
